Wood and wood product manufacturing

From source to production with deep sence of tradition and knowledge 

In 2019 wood processing sector accounted for about 2.2% of GDP. At the beginning of 2021 this industry has employed around 27 thousand workers or 2.8% of total employment. 2,126 companies were active in the industry at the beginning of 2021 and 99.8% of them were small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) with 1-249 persons employed.

In 2020 decrease of domestically produced wood processing sector exports was around 1.0% and amounted to 927 million EUR. In 2020 exports of domestically produced goods consisted mainly of builders’ joinery and carpentry (26%), wood sawn or chipped lengthwise, sliced or peeled (18%), prefabricated buildings (18%) and wood in the rough or roughly squared (10%). The slight decrease in domestically produced exports in 2020 was mostly driven by the decrease of exports of wood in the rough or roughly squared – exports value decreased by 35 million EUR or 27% to 96 million EUR. Whereas the largest growth in exports was recorded for prefabricated buildings – increased by 18 million EUR or 12% to 164 million EUR).

In 2020 the most important exports markets for the wood processing industry were Germany (16%), Norway (11%), Latvia (11%) and the United Kingdom (8.6%). Countries in the European Union accounted for 75% of exports by the wood processing industry in 2020. In 2020 the exports of domestically produced wood processing sector has decreased most significantly to China – exports value decreased by 12 million EUR or 38% to 20 million EUR. Whereas the largest growth in exports was recorded for Germany – increased by 22 million EUR or 18% to 144 million EUR.
